SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

(Finnish SUP Association)

  • Choose a SUP board correctly, a sufficiently load-bearing universal board is suitable for everyone.
  • It is recommended to attend a SUP beginner’s course. You will learn the right technique and enjoy kayaking more.
  • On a shallow beach, always paddle in a kneeling position (e.g. when beaching).
  • Always wear a leash, it’s your seat belt.
  • Bring your flotation vest. Always wear life jackets for children.
  • Take your phone in a waterproof bag and download the location app (e.g. 112 Suomi). Use a white indicator light in low light.
  • Preferably ride with a friend or friends. In a group, help is near.
  • Let someone close to you know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Also let us know if your plans change.
  • Always plan your route according to the weather, conditions and your skills.
  • Paddling upwind on a SUP board is like climbing uphill. Leave strength for the return journey as well.
  • Open water and rapids are not suitable for beginners. Move on to more challenging conditions as your skills and fitness improve. Beginner snowboarding by the beach.
  • Always be prepared for getting wet. Pay attention to cold water and cold weather. You can extend the hobby season with the appropriate equipment.
  • Avoid paddling in harbour areas, boat lanes and heavily trafficked areas. Look out for other traffic. Be vigilant, the waves of boats can surprise you.
